Why Are My Underwater Photos Blue

Those just starting out as aspiring underwater photographers generally run into the same basic problems. The good news is they are relatively easy to fix and once mastered will likely make an astounding improvement in your results.

Shark DiveA common complaint is that pictures turn out blue, not very sharp, and perhaps spotted. What that really says, especially when folks cite how great their topside snaps are, is that they haven’t figured out how to deal with the water.

Think about how the 200’ viz that’s so fantastic underwater would seem on land – pretty dismal. That’s because water is a very good filter and extraordinarily capable of sucking up color and light. Your pictures are blue because that’s the last color to go. Reds disappear first and within just a few feet, followed by orange, yellow and so on across the spectrum.

The solution is to add the light back by using a strobe or flash, but again light won’t travel too far through water. So you’ve got to get close – real close – the closer you are to what you’re photographing, the less water you have to shoot through.

Starting out you should be no more than 2 or 3 feet from your subject. This will also help make images sharper and more likely to stand out against a background, especially if you get down low and shoot upwards as well.

Of course this may tax your diving skills if you’ve not yet become proficient at moving smoothly through the water column and mastered buoyancy control. Getting close to critters that can swim or scamper away will take practice at approaching low and slow, and even waiting for them to approach you.

In fact you may want to start with shooting something incapable of moving at first, like a reef or a wreck. That will allow some mastery of the lighting and distance judging before adding the complication of fish that won’t hold still.

Yes distance becomes important. You’ll no doubt recall from your scuba certification course that objects appear about 25% larger and closer underwater. While the apparent size isn’t relevant, since the camera will just capture what it “sees”, the distance could be a problem if you think you’re within effective flash range but are actually beyond it.

On the topic of using a flash, they’re pretty much mandatory unless incredibly shallow, but they can cause problems too. Like those white spots where you thought the water was clear. That’s called backscatter and usually happens when using an underwater cameras internal flash.

The light has reflected off particles suspended in the water directly back into the camera lens resulting in blurry circles covering the image. The solution is an external flash or strobe mounted well away from the lens. Light from the flash will still reflect off any particles, but off somewhere else, thus not spoiling the shot.

If you remember the mantra, to get close, get low, shoot up, and use a strobe, you should see dramatic improvement in your underwater shots. The rest is fine tuning, tons of experimenting and practice.

Octopus – Master of Disguise

The camera captured this octopus in the midst of changing color. Not sure what color it was going for because shortly hereafter it gave up deciding and darted away in an inky cloud.

Octopus at Frederiksted, St Croix, USVILocation was on one of the pilings underneath the cruise ship pier in Frederiksted, St. Croix. In fact it was a great all round macro site, probably due in no small part to the fact that there are only a few cruise ships showing up each month. In fact they had stopped visiting altogether until recent years.

Anyway regardless of why, this magnificent pier is generally vacant and quiet, perfect for all sorts of critters to take up residence. There’s no way to see it all in a single dive so plan on several and don’t forget to visit at night.

The octopi, normally nocturnal, were easy to spot even during the day. A couple were out in plain sight, and others under rocks, but the best hiding spots were inside cans or bottles. I never cease to be amazed at how these guys can squeeze into the tiniest places.

Frederiksted, St Croix, USVIThis white one here in the bottom picture pretty much ignored us, deciding we weren’t worth changing color for. You can also see a tentacle of another shy one under the rock there about dead center and below the white octopus and the arrow crab at the far right.

No doubt the cruise ship visits to St. Croix will likely increase over time, which is good for tourism but will no doubt cause more commotion around the pier. Hopefully the diving won’t feel too much of an impact.

Keys to Keeping Your Camera Waterproof

A good underwater camera will last for years if it’s well-cared for, especially in terms of maintaining its watertight integrity. And it’s usually the little things that catch you like a strand of hair or a few grains of sand on the housing o-ring.

flooded cameraO-rings are simple in concept yet a key component of waterproofing. Every opening or penetration of the camera housing presents opportunity for leakage, and o-rings in all their assorted sizes, shapes and colors, keep the water out of a variety of camera housings, strobes, watches, and other dive equipment.

Since the case is opened often, the o-ring likely to need the most attention is the one that seals the camera inside its housing. It’s easy to contaminate and extra care should be taken in its cleaning and lubrication.

Before diving with a new camera for the first time, check for leaks by sealing the camera in the housing, dunking it under fresh water, and watching for bubbles or traces of water in the housing.

Ahead of every dive perform the same leak check before entering the water. Dive boats usually have a camera rinse bucket on board, so once you’ve prepared your camera for diving, put it in the bucket on the way out to the dive site to check for any leaks.

Keep the camera and sealed housing in water for a few minutes to ensure there’s no leakage, usually apparent if you see a stream of bubbles or you can see a small amount of water inside the housing. If this happens, remove the housing immediately, get the camera out, dry it off, and fix the leak.

And again be alert for slow leaks caused by hair, sand, or other small particles that stick to the o-ring. These small particles can cause slow leaks that will surely flood the housing given enough time, especially at depth where the pressure is greatly increased.

After the dive, be sure to rinse the camera. Soak it in fresh water before the salt water or heavily chlorinated water has a chance to dry. Be certain the housing remains sealed before submersing it, and activate all buttons and controls while soaking. Don’t use any other chemicals or cleaning agents.

Before opening any housing or ports, be sure the unit is dry and as an extra caution always open any cover with the opening facing down. That way any unseen, trapped water will fall away from the opening thus causing no damage to sensitive components.

Taking a bit of extra time to check for leaks regularly will save a ton of aggravation over a flooded housing where you may lose not just the camera but all those stored images.

Find the Peacock Flounders in This Photo

Can you locate the two Peacock Flounders in this photograph? They’re in plain sight, although there is a bit of sand disguising them, so their beautiful colors are not showing as brilliantly as when totally exposed.

Peacock FloundersOn this part of the reef they are camouflaged nicely and bear a remarkable resemblance to the surrounding rocks and coral. I would’ve included a picture with them out of hiding, but they were too fast.

Olympus StylusThis photo was taken in about 18 feet of water with the shooter submerged approximately halfway at 8 or 9 feet deep. Water clarity is phenomenal along this reef, as the wave action is minimal due to being protected by the barrier reef offshore. The camera used here was an older model Olympus - the Stylus 770SW, but despite its age the picture quality and overall performance is unchanged. It just keeps on shooting despite getting knocked around a good deal.

These pocket sized cameras are handy when snorkeling as they are waterproof down to 33 feet of depth. They are also shockproof and impervious to sand and grit which is especially useful on very shallow reefs.
